Malaria is one of the oldest diseases of mankind, and it is still an important public health problem of global concern and urgently to be solved. According to survey data, 40% of the world’s population lives in malaria-endemic areas, especially in Africa, which is still the most serious disease. Approximately 100 million people worldwide have clinical symptoms of malaria each year, 90% of whom are in Africa, and more than two million people die from malaria each year.
In order to fight against this disease, human beings have tried their best from ancient times to the present. The first medicine widely discovered is cinchona bark. In 1631, the Italian missionary Salubrino obtained this effective medicine for the treatment of fever from Peruvians in South America, which had a significant relief effect. In 1820, the French chemist and pharmacist Cavento separated the effective ingredient for treating malaria from the bark of cinchona and named it quinine.
At the beginning of the 21st century, when Miller, an American medical scientist dedicated to helping African people treat malaria, was weakened by the attenuation of quinine's efficacy, he suddenly discovered that a Chinese drug had a very good effect. And the main ingredient of this medicine is artemisinin, the names of Tu Youyou and artemisinin, which resounded all over the world.
While studying, Tu Youyou had a great interest in phytochemistry, herbal medicine, and plant taxonomy. After graduation, he was also assigned to the Institute of Chinese Medicine of the Ministry of Health (now China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences). In the early 1960s, malaria deeply plagued both sides of the Vietnam War, leading to a large reduction in combat personnel. At that time, due to limited conditions and unable to research new drugs, Vietnam asked China to help solve the problem of malaria prevention and treatment.
After two years of on-site investigations by our side sent researchers, we realized the urgency and complexity of malaria prevention and treatment, and began research on malaria in 1967. The Chinese Medicine Research Institute of the Chinese Medicine Research Institute joined in 1969. Together, there are nearly 20 participating units in this research group. In addition to the artemisinindo Tu Youyou phát hiện, có nhiều kết quả nghiên cứu khác, chẳng hạn như sự biến đổi của Changshan Bine.
However, the discovery of artemisinin is more effective. In 1972, Tu Youyou and his colleagues extracted artemisinin from Artemisia annua. They found that this drug has specific effects on various malaria, and has the advantages of high efficiency, quick effect, and low toxicity. In 1973, dihydroartemisinin was synthesized. Dihydroartemisinin is more effective than natural artemisinin.
These 7 organizations all said they discovered it by themselves, and Miller didn't know what was going on for a while. In fact, all these 7 organizations had a cooperative relationship with Tu Youyou. Fortunately, Miller did not give up, and then asked who the second contributor was to get the real answer. Seven institutions all named Tu Youyou. She was the well-deserved inventor of artemisinin, đó là kết quả của giải Nobel.
